Week 2 Overview

This week we look at Chapter 3: Applying the Multimedia Principle: Use Words and Graphics Rather than Words Alone and Chapter 4: Applying the Contiguity Principle: Align Words to Corresponding Graphics.

Chapter 3: Adding graphics to text in e-learning often increases the cost and production time of the training and can add to download delays in Internet-delivered training. Are these drawbacks offset by improved learning? Chapter 3 summarizes the empirical evidence for learning gains that result from combining text and relative graphics in e-lessons. It also discusses some types of graphics that are useful in e-learning and describe the psychological basis for the improved learning that stems from a combination of text and graphics.

Chapter 4: This chapter summarizes the empirical evidence for learning gains resulting from presenting text and graphics in an integrated fashion on the screen, compared to the same information presented separately. It illustrates some of the more common violations of this principle in misplacement of text and graphics on scrolling screens, directions and feedback to exercises, and information accessed from a lesson link.
